With the challenge from my mentor principal to develop a process to support students that were considered “frequent flyers” in the office, I decided to try targeted social groups. This type of grouping utilizing an anchor text had not been implemented at RMS. Our school counselors, who routinely talk to students, talk to them on an individual or teacher recommended basis.
While meeting with the teachers, I also shared my logic model to give them a visual of the ultimate goal.
Above is a snapshot of the student’s 2nd and 3rd quarter discipline data. Though we did not meet our 10% referral reduction as a cohort, I am proud to say that 2 out of 6 students did decrease in their number of PBIS referrals. JC & JD had a drastic reduction in PBIS referrals in comparing 2nd quarter data to 3rd quarter data, but that was solely due to the two receiving a 10 day suspension during our 8 week session.
As a leader, I am determined to be proactive instead of reactive. The students in my group, unfortunately, had reputations that preceded them. For this reason alone, trying to come up with a plan to counteract the behaviors should have been a top priority at the beginning of the school year. As I reflect, my recommendations are:
-Determine students who have significant behavior challenges at the start of the school year.
-Consult with school counselors to determine what interventions they are utilizing and how can they be implemented in the classrooms.
-Invest in Social Emotional Learning professional development for staff
-Purchase class sets of Stephen Covey’s book “7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens”
-Create small socratic circles in order to engage students in dialogue about choices / positive behavior strategies
-Celebrate small accomplishments/victories
-Be open to student feedback/suggestions
-Be willing to "FAIL FORWARD"
